New Reed Switch Design Offers Accurate, Reliable Alert
July 31, 2002
Racine, Wis. - Hedland Flow-Alert™ flow switches with new reed switch design can reduce maintenance costs and increase productivity by automatically sending a signal when out-of-range liquid or gas volumes are detected in hydraulic or pneumatic systems, according to the Hedland® Flow Meter division of Racine Federated Inc.
The reed switches can open or close electrical circuits to trigger warning lights or shut down pumps and other equipment to prevent damage when flow rates fluctuate. An internal piston magnet moves in direct proportion to flow rate and activates the reed switch as it passes. No mechanical linkage between actuating parts and electronic sensors eliminates de-coulpling problems, increasing reliability over standard flow switches.
Constructed of high impact resistant polysulfone and stainless steel for greater tolerance to pressure and temperature as well as chemical compatibility, these flow switches are ideal for a wide range of liquid/air monitoring applications, including oil lubrication, solar systems, process control, chemical processing, hydraulics and more.
The meters also feature the unique Hedland variable area metering design with a spring-retained movable piston. The linear movement of the piston provides a quick and easy visual reading against the graduated flow scale, mounted on the outer surface of the transparent meter body. The direct-reading flow switch can be installed quickly, in any position from vertical to horizontal, without costly flow straighteners or other special plumbing requirements. Operating within ±2% accuracy, the EZ-View is available in two piston designs: a standard cylindrical walled piston for maximum visibility with opaque liquids, or a ribbed piston design to accomodate liquids containing suspended particulate, up to 400 microns.
Flow-Alert™ switches are available in six sizes from 1/4" to 1-1/2" in aluminum and brass for pressures to 3,500 psi (241 bar) and in stainless steel for pressures up to 6,000 psi (414 bar). The standard meters offer flow ranges from 0.5 GPM to 28 GPM depending on the model. GPM, LPM, PPM and custom calibrations are available.
Hedland also offers a Flow-Alert™ Signal, which automatically triggers an alarm control circuit if the flow exceed or drops below preset limits. This economical model is availabe for AC or DC power supply, and includes a Hirschmann type electrical connector. Easily installed in any position, the EZ-View with Flow-Alert™ offers repeatability within ±1%.
